Yellow Pearls is a zine series filled with resources and exercises for self-healing, channeling anger, and encouraging community aid. It was created with Asian Femmes in mind, who struggle disproportionately with mental health. Insides each issue, you will find research, cathartic activities, and insightful interviews with Asian femme activists and healers working to radically shift the conversations around mental health in the Asian American community. Popularly used in the 1980s by feminist, punk, and other activist movements, zines have often been defined by a DIY aesthetic. In developing the visual identity of Yellow Pearls, it was important we continued to honor that style. Inspired by brutalist typefaces, and wanting to lean into a DIY aesthetic, I chose a variety of bold typefaces paired with playful layouts & graphics, leaving many traditional typography rules intentionally behind.
